Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute, research center

With the goal of restructuring society around spiritual values through a revival of the ancient Yogic discipline, Swami Kuvalyananda established the Kaivalyadhama Yoga Institute at Lonavla in 1924.

One of the first things that he undertook to do was bringing out “Yoga Mimamsa”, a Yogic Journal. Hitherto considered sacred and only for a chosen few, Yoga was now presented as a science. The impact was soon felt and an enthusiastic team of people, dedicated to Yogic research, joined Swamiji.

Swamiji thought it necessary that, unless we unfold and explore the traditional Yogic knowledge through literary research, no experimental studies can be carried out. Keeping this in mind, he established a specialized department in 1944 for Philosophico-Literary Research which is in itself an attraction for the erudite scholars.

All Swamiji’s work gained momentum, it gained recognition too. It led to the foundation of the Gordhandas Seksaria College of Yoga & Cultural Synthesis in 1950. A systematic program was introduced, wherein able teachers effectively imparted the theoretical and practical aspects of Yoga.

Along with the spiritual and physical culturists, a number of patients suffering from various psychosomatic diseases started coming to Kaivalyadhama. The Yogic Hospital, was established in 1961 to look after their therapeutic needs. This is the first ever hospital of its kind in India where Yogic treatment is given under complete medical supervision and results assessed on scientific lines with the help of a research laboratory.

With the increased awareness of the benefits of Yoga that helps balancing mind and body, many people came to Kdhm to learn an efficient system of Health management through Yogic practices.

It necessitated the conversion of the hospital into a full-fledged Health Care Centre which great care given to provide wholesome meals nutritious and easily digestible ensuring a healthy and balanced diet.

To augment the benefits, a Naturopathy Centre has been established and also an Ayurvedic Centre since few years.

Above all, the regular chanting of mantras and the sacrificial fire performed everyday by Swami Maheshananda at the Kutir provide food for the soul.
